Why do raccoons stand up?

Raccoons have a very clearly defined 'safe zone', within 5-10 feet they will commonly stand up on their hind legs and growl or hiss at approaching humans. Raccoons will take advantage of any and all food sources. This includes your compost, garbage, pet food, fruit trees etc.
Besides, why do raccoons walk on their front legs?
Because its hind legs are longer than the front legs, a raccoon often appears hunched when they walk or run. When able, a raccoon will examine objects in water. Their front toes can be opened wide, the front paws can be used skillfully to handle food and other objects. But they don't have opposable thumbs.
Keeping this in view, how do you scare away raccoons?
Seal entry points to chimneys, eaves, and attics.
- Scare 'em. If raccoons are raiding your garden, try scaring them off with motion-detecting sprinklers or strobe lights.
- Fence the garden. A fence can help protect crops, but remember that raccoons are good climbers.
- Repel 'em.
- Remove food.
- Tend to pets.
Raccoons are known to be aggressive, and, beyond any doubt, they are good at defending themselves from other predatory animals. They are equipped with long, sharp claws. Joined together, all these make a raccoon an animal that is very well equipped to put on a decent fight.
