We spend about 15-20 minutes working on All About Spellings lessons 4 days a week. That is just enough time to quickly review previous cards, teach the lesson, and spell a few words.
Keeping this in view, when should I start all about spelling?
Ideally, you should start teaching spelling by the end of first grade. But if your child is older than that, don't despair! All About Spelling is perfect for older kids as well.
Then, what is the most effective way to teach spelling?
The five most effective ways to teach spelling
- Study the origins of words. The National Curriculum non-statutory spelling guidance suggests exploring the etymology of words to help pupils see the links between spellings.
- Create neologisms to teach spelling.
- Perform contraction surgery.
- Get pupils to spot irregular verbs.
- Mark by the letter.
While reading skills such as phonemic awareness and the ability to apply phonics provide the basis for spelling instruction, the benefits of learning to spell are not confined to writing. Though it is true that good readers are more likely to become good spellers the opposite is also true.
