Pry out the loose or damaged slate with the flat edge of a small pry bar. If the tile doesn't lift out easily, you may have to chip it off the underlayment with a chisel and a hammer. If the slate is only loose, you can reuse it. If the slate is broken, you'll need a replacement piece of slate.
Herein, how do you fix slate steps?
Replacing Slate Tiles Without Mortar
- Using your trowel, loosen the sand under the tile that was removed, then dig out the sand down to the gravel bed with the trowel.
- Add a fresh layer of fine-builder's sand and level it out using the bottom of the trowel.
Then, how do you remove slate?
Strike the chisel with the sledgehammer to loosen and remove the tile. Continue to remove each slate tile by hand for smaller areas. For larger areas, remove enough tile by hand to fit the blade of an electric tile stripper against the subfloor, next to the slate tile.
