if you have a compressor and a small spray gun then by all means you should use an automotive urethane primer. its 2 component and will need a catalyst. its very easy to come by. since its not just air dry or lacquer base like rattle can stuff it will bond much better to pla and shrink less into the layer marks.
Also question is, what paint works on PLA?
MakerBot PLA Filament is easily painted with cellulose spray paints or oil paints, though acrylic paints are considered to be the best choice. For optimal safety, use child-friendly paints.
Also question is, how do you finish PLA prints?
Nearly any attempt at PLA smoothing requires some amount of sanding. The best technique is to use multiple grits of sandpaper, starting from course, like 200 grit, and continuing to smooth, like 4000 grit, if available. Sand in a circular motion against the grain of the layer lines.
Both PLA and ABS are sandable, paintable, and bondable. Finer detail can be extracted from PLA, but this material can tend toward brittleness and floppy, curled edges. While PLA can adhere to many things.
