Gametes are reproductive cells, such as sperm and egg. As gametes are produced, the number of chromosomes must be reduced by half. Why? The zygote must contain genetic information from the mother and from the father, so the gametes must contain half of the chromosomes found in normal body cells.
Hereof, why is it important for gametes to have half the diploid number of chromosomes?
Why is it important that gametes have half the number of chromosomes than the rest of the body cells ? -because when sperm and egg fuse, the zygote formed will contain the normal diploid number of chromosomes characteristic of the species.
Also to know is, why do gametes only have 23 chromosomes?
Meiosis is cell division for gametes, or reproductive cells (sperm and egg). We have 23 pairs of chromosomes (which contain our DNA), so 46 in total. The reason is because in a regular cell, 23 chromosomes come from the mother and the other 23 come from the father.
