Understanding isoflavones
Phytoestrogens are estrogen-like compounds found in plants. Soy flour and soybean oil are used to make a lot of different kinds of food, so there are many "hidden" sources of isoflavones in the diet, in addition to the foods that obviously are made from soybeans.
Simply so, does soy really increase estrogen?
Soy is unique in that it contains a high concentration of isoflavones, a type of plant estrogen (phytoestrogen) that is similar in function to human estrogen but with much weaker effects. Soy isoflavones can bind to estrogen receptors in the body and cause either weak estrogenic or anti-estrogenic activity.
Secondly, what foods are high in soybean oil?
Foods That May Contain Soy
- Baked goods (breads, cookies, and crackers)
- Canned broth and soup.
- Canned tuna and meat.
- Cereals.
- High-protein energy bars and snacks.
- Infant formula.
- Low-fat peanut butter.
- Processed meats, like deli meats.
Unfortunately, soybean oil added in the manufacturing of these foods is often partially hydrogenated. This form of soybean oil is known as "trans fat," and should be avoided for general health purposes. Even though soybean oil isn't likely to exacerbate cancer growth it is not considered a healthy fat overall.
