Question about sanding aluminum. Most sand paper is aluminum oxide grit so expect to use a lot of paper until you remove the oxide layer. Aluminum is also a very sticky metal and loads up cutting tools and abrasives really quickly. Wet sanding with soapy water will help with the loading.
- Decide how big the area is that you need to smooth. If it is large, a sander may complete the job more efficiently.
- Use 160-grit sandpaper for deeper scratches and blemishes. If the aluminum has only mild scratches, 230-grit sandpaper is sufficient.
