University of California, Davis Research shows walls adjacent to concrete pavements become hotter during the day than walls adjacent to asphalt pavements. New research by several universities is in fact showing that dark-colored pavements do more to mitigate the UHI effect than light-colored pavements.
Also, does asphalt get hotter than concrete?
The black asphalt absorbs more heat than the light colored concrete, and the manhole cover is darker than the concrete and because it's metal it absorbs heat more readily than the asphalt.
Secondly, is concrete better than asphalt?
Concrete lasts longer, but asphalt driveways are less expensive to install. Asphalt needs more maintenance, but is generally easier to repair. Asphalt, he says, can handle the extreme temperature fluctuations in the Northeast better than concrete because it flexes.
The black asphalt absorbs most of the sunlight and the white cement reflects most of it.
