Each 55 gallon barrel will float approximately 450 pounds, BUT that is when the barrel is 99% submerged. If you only want half of the barrel in the water, cut that 450 figure in half.
In respect to this, how do you build a floating dock using plastic barrels?
- Step 1: Build the Frame. So once you have your parts head out to the body of water you want to place the dock in.
- Step 2: Support the Frame.
- Step 3: Add the Barrels.
- Step 4: Flip It.
- Step 5: Deck It.
- Step 6: Float.
- Step 7: A Ramp Begins
- Step 8: Flip It and Float It.
Keeping this in consideration, how much buoyancy does a 55 gallon drum have?
I know a 55 gallon barrel of water has about 440 pounds of buoyancy.
Concrete anchors are the most common way to secure a floating dock. Make sure you have lots of weight and use a 3/8 galvanized chain to attach your dock to the anchor. It's also advisable to mount the chains in a crisscross configuration.
