First, break the original cornicing away using a chisel and a hammer. Next, prep the wall. Fill any holes and cracks and remove old adhesive with a chisel or filling knife. Sand the area so it's smooth.
In respect to this, should I remove coving?
Coving can make the room look smaller ceilings lower & out of date. if you want it to look moden don't use coving. If you ever wanted to remove it, you will get damage to the walls & ceiling. Any cracks can be sorted.
Also to know, how do you remove old plaster cornices?
Get a nice sharp paint scraper and bang it in flat along the ceiling above the cornice to break the cement. Whack your scraper into the corner joins too so that you break the joint. The cornice should pull away pretty easily, just make sure you don't rip the ceiling.
