Are Waterford bits Hunter legal?
Also, what Bits are legal in the hunter ring?
In the hunter ring, traditional bits are recommended, which include snaffles, pelhams, and full bridles—all with a cavesson nosebands. Nontraditional bits, such as hunter gags & Kimberwicks, MAY be penalized at the judge's discretion. Illegal bits includes two & three ring bits, jumper-type gags, etc.
Accordingly, is a Waterford a harsh bit?
The bit action of a waterford mouthpiece is normally moderate, but can become very severe in rough hands if used with a "sawing" action. As with any bit it can only be as severe or as strong as the hands of the rider that is using it.
Technically no bits are "illegal" in hunter classes (USEF). But the rule book "recommends" snaffles and pelhams and then says that all other bits/nosebands are considered unconventional and can be penalized at the judge's discretion.
